Since 1964, Barber's Driving School has taught thousands of people from over 100 different countries to drive an automobile safely. We are a full-service driving school that will help you obtain your learner's permit, teach you to drive a car, test you for your Georgia Driver's License, and assist you with buying a car and getting automobile insurance. We will even show you around Columbus and the surrounding area and anything else we can to make you feel welcome and at home.
At Barber’s Driving School, you do not need a Learner’s Permit or any experience to start. We have friendly, courteous, skillfully trained bi-lingual (Spanish) instructors who will make learning to drive a simple and fun thing to do.
Barber’s is a national award-winning commercial driver training school. After 51 years of research and development and with proven techniques, Barber's has engineered the art of collision prevention. We take a holistic approach to driver training, which includes training in all seven dimensions: Legal Knowledge, Mental Skills, Physical Skills, Communication Skills, Social Skills, Financial Awareness, and Planning Skills.
Bi-lingual Instructors and Staff
All behind-the-wheel classes are offered in English or Spanish. You may request a Spanish-speaking representative to talk with when you call Barber’s to ask questions or to enroll.
Passing the Written Test for your Learners Permit (ESL)
Taking a written test when English is your second language can be challenging. However, at Barber’s, we offer private one-on-one tutoring to better prepare you for the written test. Georgia offers the written test for General Knowledge, which is on a computer in 10 different Languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Vietnamese. The Road Sign Test, however, is only available in English. All drivers must have the ability to read and understand simple English such as used in highway traffic and directional signs.
Learning to drive when English is your Second language (ESL)
Learning to drive has been made easy with Barber’s pictorial and hand sign method of training. If you speak a language other than English or Spanish and understand a little English, we can teach you. Of course, you may bring along an interpreter if needed, a relative or friend.
Taking your Road Test for your Driver’s License (ESL)
If you select a combination package, Barber’s Driving School will administer your Georgia Road Test. If you select the behind-the-wheel-only package, we will take you to the DDS for your Georgia Road Test or DMV for your Alabama Road Test.
Step 1 Select the Package Right for You
First Option: You can sign up for a combination classroom and behind-the-wheel course. When you select the combination package of classroom and behind-the-wheel, Barber’s can administer the Georgia Road Test to you for your Driver’s License upon competition of the course. However, Barber’s is not licensed to administer the Alabama Road Test, but it can make arrangements for you to take your Alabama Road Test.
Second Option: You can sign up for behind-the-wheel-only classes. If you are a Georgia resident and you select the behind-the-wheel-only, you will have to test at the Georgia Department of Driver Services. Likewise, our behind-the-wheel-only packages start with a minimum of 6 hours and go up in 2-hour increments; the more hours you purchase, the better the price. You may also be interested in our Custom Driver Education. If you are already driving and only need help with a specific vehicle maneuver like parking, driving on Interstate Highways, backing, etc., you may purchase as few as 2 hours.
All driving times are by appointment in 2-3-4-6 or 8-hour sessions. We will pick you up and drop you off anywhere in Muscogee County, parts of Harris County and Chattahoochee County, Georgia. We also offer free pick up and drop also in Russell and parts of Lee County, Alabama.
Third Option: You may also be interested in our Custom Driver Education. If you are already driving and only need help with a specific vehicle maneuver like parking, driving on Interstate Highways, backing, etc., you may purchase as few as 2 hours.
Step 2 Select your Classroom Schedule
The 30 hours of classroom instruction are taught using a pre-determined schedule based on the curriculum. We have classes that meet on weekends only. Also, during holidays, we offer a condensed program that can be taken in one week. In the summer, classes are 4 days (9-5:30pm) and 5 days (9-4pm), each consisting of 30 hours.
